'Reflection' | Original acrylic & oil pastel on French linen, Paris architectural floral | 37x40"
In 1999, I spent fie weeks in Paris studying painting and drawing through Parsons Paris. I was young, completely in over my head, and it was the summer that taught me how to actually be an artist.
I lived in a tiny student hostel and spent every day drawing, painting, and wandering streets that felt like they were from another world.
Twenty five years later, after two weeks as an artist-in-residence at the Chateau d’Orquevaux in the French countryside, I gave myself two final days in Paris. I spent my last day looking for that hostel. I found it. And then I just walked—flooded with memories, getting deja vu around every corner.
I wandered into a tiny fenced in park in the middle of the city. White blossoms bursting from the trees. And behind them, one of those perfect Haussmann buildings—the ones with the slate mansard rooftops and arched dormer windows that make Paris look like Paris. I stood there and was overcome with emotion.
‘Reflection’ is the result. The building is pained almost hyper-realistically—exactly how I experienced it. The flowers and the color surrounding it represent everything else: the memories, the feelings, the 25 years of living in between that first summer and this one. Past and present, all on the same canvas.
I bought this gorgeous French linen at my residency—it breathes through the paint the way memory breathes through everything else.
